Why the fuck would we even consider going on a trip to The Peak when we live at the bottom of one of the most beautiful rock climbing cliffs in the world. This is what crossed our minds when we decided to make this journey come true. We being, a bunch of French climbers from Ceuse. But what drew us was the challenge and the intimidating aura the Peak District has…
The Peak District is a magic place located in the central north of England. Full of British climbing history, it’s a great immersion in the trad climbing culture. No bolts, no pitons, nothing, even no anchors. The rock is left intact, virgin. It hasn’t been like that forever… but now it is the way the British climbers do it.
We call it Headpointed. It’s an exposed and committed way to climb a route. The protections are not easy to find sometimes or it’s just that there are not many cracks. But the rock, The Gritstone, has an amazing grip which allows quite delicate prehension’s!
What an adventure for us! We ended up completely charmed! The climbing is a combination of bouldering and trad climbing. Powerful, exposed, but long enough to feel the void! We explored the main areas, Stanage, Millstone, Black Rocks, Burbage, Higgar Thor… Two weeks wandering around, with no rain! Exceptional for this region we’ve been told… We pushed our limits, got sweaty hands and shaking legs during the climbs… we fell close to the ground a few times , experiencing the fear while climbing… and had fun, a lot!
